Compare income tax regimes using your eligible deductions

The lower-tax regime depends on your income and the deductions you can actually claim. This comparison uses ordinary slab-rate income, separates salary from other income, and applies the appropriate standard deduction. The selected year stays with your exported calculation. It is an estimate of personal tax liability, not an income-tax return or a determination of eligibility to switch regimes.

Worked example

A resident with Rs 12.75 lakh salary and no other income has Rs 12 lakh new-regime taxable income after the Rs 75,000 standard deduction. The Rs 60,000 slab tax is offset by rebate. At Rs 12.85 lakh salary, taxable income is Rs 12.10 lakh: marginal relief limits pre-cess tax to Rs 10,000, giving Rs 10,400 including cess.

Formula and calculation method

Tax = slab tax - rebate - rebate marginal relief + surcharge - surcharge marginal relief + 4% cess

New-regime bands are Rs 0-4 lakh at 0%, 4-8 lakh at 5%, 8-12 lakh at 10%, 12-16 lakh at 15%, 16-20 lakh at 20%, 20-24 lakh at 25%, and above 24 lakh at 30%. The salary standard deduction is up to Rs 75,000 in the new regime and Rs 50,000 in the old regime. The same modeled rates apply to both year selections. Resident new-regime taxpayers receive a rebate up to Rs 60,000 at taxable income up to Rs 12 lakh, with marginal relief just above the threshold. Old-regime resident rebate is up to Rs 12,500 at income up to Rs 5 lakh.

Interpretation and limitations

Age changes the old-regime basic exemption for resident senior citizens. Surcharge tiers and threshold relief are included. The engine excludes special-rate income, losses, agricultural-income integration and treaty relief. Health, HRA and employer NPS fields require already-eligible amounts. Income after tax does not subtract investment contributions, PF or other payroll deductions. FY 2026-27 rate continuity reference: Union Budget 2026 memorandum.

Income Tax Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I compare the old and new tax regimes?

Compare tax on the same income using deductions and exemptions actually available under each regime. A lower modeled liability is an estimate, not confirmation of eligibility to choose or switch a regime.

Which tax periods does this calculator support?

It supports FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27. FY 2025-26 corresponds to AY 2026-27 under the earlier Act. The official term for the income period starting April 2026 under the Income-tax Act, 2025 is Tax Year 2026-27. Match the selected period to the income being estimated.

Why can Rs 12.75 lakh of salary have no modeled new-regime tax?

In the supported scenario, a resident with only eligible salary income can reach Rs 12 lakh taxable income after the Rs 75,000 standard deduction. The rebate then offsets ordinary slab tax. Other income or special-rate gains can change the result.

What is marginal relief near a rebate threshold?

It limits the abrupt increase in eligible tax when taxable income moves just above the rebate boundary. It is not an additional deduction from salary. The calculator applies the supported rebate relief before adding cess.

Is TDS the same as my final income tax?

No. TDS is tax already withheld. Final liability depends on annual income and eligible adjustments. Comparing entered tax paid with estimated liability produces a possible balance due or refund, not a confirmed assessment.

More questions (6)
Does this calculate capital gains or crypto tax?

No. Special-rate income, including gains that require separate rates, is outside this engine. Adding those amounts as ordinary income can produce an incorrect estimate. The tool is not a substitute for a complete tax return.

Are HRA and other deduction amounts automatically verified?

No. Inputs must reflect amounts you are eligible to claim, supported by the applicable conditions and records. This calculator does not validate rent receipts, employer contributions or deduction eligibility.

Is Rs 12 lakh the basic exemption?

No. In the modeled new regime, the basic exemption is Rs 4 lakh. The resident rebate can offset ordinary slab tax up to Rs 12 lakh of taxable income. Special-rate income needs separate treatment and is not supported here.

Should I enter CTC or salary?

Enter taxable gross salary before the deductions provided in this tool, not a CTC figure that includes unrelated employer costs. Include employer NPS contribution when also claiming its eligible deduction.

Can non-residents use the calculator?

A non-resident option removes resident rebates and resident senior-age exemptions. It still only models ordinary slab-rate income; treaty rates and special non-resident provisions need separate assessment.

Why is this different from my monthly payslip?

Payroll may use estimated bonuses, declarations, previous employment and remaining months to adjust TDS. This tool estimates annual liability and compares it with the tax you enter as already paid.
